This morning was the third likemind monthly meetup. This was the first one I had been to, and got a chance to meet and chat with a bunch of interesting people. Actually, there’s a neat little backstory full of weird coincidences…
A week ago, I was surfing around and happened to stumble upon Chris Glass‘ marvelous site. On his site, I saw a link to this great picture:
A few days later, I was browsing Bryan’s site (I used to sit right between Bryan and Piers when I was at Anomaly) and clicked through to Johanna’s blog from one of the comments. I scrolled down a few posts and to my surprise saw this post about the same quote that’s on the Starbucks cup! I left a comment with a link to the photo, and Johanna sent me an email reply. We started talking about blogs, New York, and she asked if I had heard about the likemind meetups. I had! We both said we’d make an effort to attend the next one (today’s).
Then, this past weekend, I was browsing through the likemind flickr stream and saw the name ‘Michael Surtees’ in one of the photos. “Why does this name sound familiar?” I asked myself.
Then I realized something… Michael Surtees was the one who snapped that picture of the Starbucks cup. My mind was officially blown. I promptly sent him a message about the cup the related coincidences and IM’ed Johanna the same.
I met both Michael and Johanna for the first time at this morning’s coffee. Good times! I also chatted with Charles and Harris (the caffeine-deprived guy in the background) and a few others (too many names to remember). On the walk back, Piers, Jeff and I dished about the morning’s events and the concept of “I Read Of”.
Sometimes you forget just how small of a city this is. If you missed out today, check out the likemind.ny site- the meetups are open to anyone. And when the next one rolls around, feel free to drop in. Say “hi”.

Hey Jack, glad you enjoyed yourself. Sorry we didn’t get a chance to chack, hopefully next time, though.
No problem at all. Thanks Noah!
Yay, you posted the story! I will surely link to it, thus raising you on Technorati :D Great to finally meet you, Jack. I like putting faces to blog personalities.
What’s a chack Noah? I feel as though I should say “hiâ€! Very cool story and it was great to meet both you Jack and Johanna. And it was great to spend even more time with Noah. Till next time.
Jack,
Good to meet today. I’m glad I could be on the sidelines of such a strange coincidence. Maybe later on this story will be extended to include:
“…and that’s actually how we met Charles, that guy who fought off all those robots when they tried to eat our babies.”
Great meeting all of you!
And now I know who to call if I see any baby-eating robots.
Chack = chat. I shouldn’t talk with a mouth full of baby-eating robots.
My mind is like a bunch of nothing. Whatever. I don’t care. My life’s been pretty unremarkable lately, but shrug.
